Yay! It’s May!

We had a great winter filled with powder, breakfast burritos, and après-ski beers. We had a great start to the spring season with a bunch of new restaurant openings around the city as the rain poured. And now it’s time for my favorite season: festival season. The weather is finally getting warmer and more predictable and that means food trucks, food and drink festivals, outdoor concerts, and long nights begin now. Check out our list of the restaurants, dishes, festivals, concerts, and events you have to check out this May.

New Spots & Plate Highlights

NEW: Craft by Proper Brewing Co. in Sugar House

Local love is the best love. Craft by Proper was opened last month in Sugar House and features 36 rotating local beers on tap and an even bigger collection of local bottles. Nothing from out of state. It’s beautiful. Craft doesn’t serve food, but they say feel free to bring in outside food from any of the Best Restaurants in Sugar House nearby. With a big open window at the front, you’ll enjoy the people watching just as much as the beer selection. In the basement you’ll also find a second bar with a collection of arcade games, pinball machines, and a classic Skee Ball machine.

NEW: Cotton Kitchen

Cotton Kitchen is a new breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot located near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. This place is perfect for a late start to a spring day of shredding slush at Snowbird. They also have a selection of wine, mimosas, and beer if you want a really good start to your day of spring skiing (just be responsible please).

HIGHLIGHT: Shrimp Dumplings from Post Office Place

Located next to Takashi is Post Office Place, a tapas and cocktails spot in Downtown SLC that had been on our list for too long. We ordered a bunch of small plates that we loved like the pork belly slider and the tuna tartare, but the shrimp dumplings were something warm on a cold day. Otherwise it would be a 3-way tie for first place. We will be back really soon to hit the rest of their menu.

HIGHLIGHT: Spicy Beef Short Rib Bánh Mì from Little Saigon

When you visit a restaurant you haven’t been to in a minute, it’s like seeing an old friend – you pick up right where you left off. Recently we made our way to Little Saigon, which made our Best Vietnamese and Best of Sugar House lists, and by the second bite we were already cracking inside jokes and telling old stories or whatever the food version of that is so I can complete that shoehorned friend metaphor.

HIGHLIGHT: Corn Cakes from East Liberty Tap House

If you haven’t made your way to ELTH for brunch, this should convince you.

New Lists & Reviews

Here are the new lists we put together in April. Peep.

Upcoming Festivals & Events

Festival food is the best food because many times you won’t be able to get your favorite food until next year. That is the case with the Basque churros seen below which is made by the Basque Club of Utah which I have only seen during the Living Traditions Festival. I long for them. Listed below are some of the May festivals in Salt Lake City you need to put on your calendar immediately.

Concerts & Shows

If there’s a festival season, there’s definitely a touring season. There are a bunch of great bands stopping in Salt Lake City this month, as well as some badass local bands owning the stage. The big highlight here is the Kilby Court 20th Anniversary Block Party with Death Cab For Cutie, The National Parks, Joshua James, Ritt Momney, Picture This, Palace of Buddies, Breakfast in Silence, The Backseat Lovers, and Drew Danburry sharing the stage to celebrate the legendary all-ages venue in the Granary District. Death Cab is returning to Kilby as they first played the venue in 2001. Get your tickets asap.
